Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a midwife and a doula?
Nurse midwives and certified doulas are two parts of a birthing team. Both have different training and education and can provide different kinds of support and care during your pregnancy, labor and beyond.
Midwives have master’s degrees in midwifery and often have experience working as labor and delivery nurses. Like Ob/Gyns, they support gynecological health and pregnancy care from a medical perspective. They can deliver your baby vaginally.
Certified doulas don’t necessarily have degrees in healthcare. They earn credentials and accreditations from dedicated training agencies or programs. Doulas don’t offer medical advice or care. Their role is to provide education and support to mothers/families and to act as their advocates.
Are your services covered by insurance?
At this time, my services are not covered by insurance. Unfortunately, accepting insurance payments often comes with specific requirements and limitations that I’m not willing to compromise on, as they can affect the level of care and advocacy I provide. That said, there are multiple payment options available, and I encourage you not to let financial concerns prevent you from receiving the support you deserve. Please feel free to schedule a free consultation so we can discuss payment options and explore how I can best assist you during this important time.
Aren’t doulas only for home births/birth centers and deliveries with no pain medications?
No! Every mother can benefit from having a doula present at their birth - and research confirms this. A doula being present for a mother’s delivery decreases the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%.
My job is to champion your birth plan and needs, not my own! Whether your goal is to deliver your baby without any medication at home or in a hospital with an epidural, you deserve to come out of this experience feeling empowered, accomplished, and safe.
Are doulas only for first time mothers?
Absolutely not! In fact, it may be because someone experienced a traumatic birth experience the first time around that they seek out more holistic, evidence-based care in subsequent pregnancies. Doulas are for every mother, regardless of how many babies and births you’ve already had.
